Benjamin Martin
Benjamin Martin holds a Bachelor of Music Performance (1999) from the University of Tasmania and a Master of Music Performance (2005) from the University of Melbourne. Benjamin’s diverse repertoire includes Monteverdi’s II Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda, Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, Bach’s St John and St Matthew Passions, Beethoven’s Mass in C, Handel’s Messiah, Haydn’s St Nicholas and Nelson Masses, Mozart’s Cosi Fan Tutte, Coronation Mass and Requiem and Vespers, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solenelle, Hindemith’s Hin und Zurück, and the Australian premières of Frigyes Hidas’s Requiem and Brenton Broadstock’s Stations of the Cross. Competition highlights include: Finalist – 3MBS Young Performer of the Year 2004, Winner – The Armstead Singing Award 2004, and Winner – Nino Sanciolo Award – Mietta Song Recital Award 2004. Currently under the tutelage of Anna Connolly, engagements for 2006 include tenor soloist for the Bach Cantata Programme at St John’s Southgate, and Mozart’s Great Mass in C Minor for the Melbourne Chorale at Hamer Hall. In August 2006 Benjamin will perform as soloist in Purcell’s King Arthur as a Young Artist at the prestigious Britten-Pears School in Aldeburgh (UK).
Amanda Hodder
Amanda Hodder holds a Masters in Music from the University of Melbourne. During her undergraduate studies, she won awards for collaborative pianism and was featured on ABC Classic FM’s Rising Stars program. Since moving to Melbourne in 1998, Amanda has worked as an accompanist for all the major Melbourne universities and is currently the on staff accompanist for the voice department at the Victorian College of the Arts. As a repetiteur, Amanda has worked for all the major Melbourne opera companies and Opera Australia. In 2003 Amanda won the major ensemble award at the National Liederfest. As a Music Director, Amanda has worked on such shows as Tick Tic….BOOM!, The Threepenny Opera, and The Wild Blue. In 2004 Amanda won the Hugh D. T. Williamson Accompanist’s Award at the Mietta Song Recital, an award which secured her work at l’Académie Internationale d’Eté de Nice. The award also enabled Amanda to spend most of 2005 studying in Paris and Southern Germany. In 2007 Amanda was the recipient of the Lady Hamer Award, an award made specifically for pianist who are interested in working collaboratively with other musicians. In May 2008 Amanda was the recipient of the Geoffrey Parsons Award and was a MacDonald Trust Scholar at the VCA for 2008. On television, Amanda has worked with The Choir of Hard Knocks, performed with Ronan Keating on Rove Live, and continues to perform for ABC Classic FM and 3MBS.

Helen Barnett
Helen Barnett is a graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music with a Diploma of Opera and Graduate Diploma of Music (Opera), finishing top of her postgraduate year with a High Distinction and successfully gained her Licentiate in singing (AMEB), she is currently enrolled in a Masters of Music (Performance) at the Sydney Conservatorium. She works with teacher Maree Ryan and accompanist and coach David Miller. Helen has performed extensively throughout Sydney and NSW both in recital opera and oratorio. Helen has performed the roles of First Lady in Mozart’s Die Zauberflote for Opera South and the role of Cherubino in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro for the Sydney Conservatorium Opera Studio, directed by Patrick Nolan. She is currently in the chorus of Opera Australia’s production of Der Rosenkavalier. Helen has sung the soprano solos in Vesperae Solennes de Confessore, The Lord Nelson Mass and Handel’s Chandos Anthem (9th). Helen will be singing the soprano solo in The Messiah in Sydney’s Town Hall in December of this year.
Marie Searles
Marie Searles completed a Bachelor of Music at the Canberra School of Music in 2002 where she studied piano with Susanne Powell. During her degree Marie was twice awarded the Margaret Smiles Accompaniment Prize for the best vocal and instrumental accompanist. In 2002, Marie was selected to participate in various musical events including National Music Camp and the Australian Festival of Chamber Music. From these experiences she has been privileged to work with distinguished musicians including Cho-Liang Lin and Helena Rathbone and to participate in masterclasses with Piers Lane, James Buswell and Roger Benedict. Marie is currently completing a Masters in accompaniment at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music where she studies with the distinguished teacher David Miller. As part of her postgraduate studies, Marie has performed with musicians of excellence including Caroline Henbest, Ben Jacks and Michael Halliwell. In 2004 Marie played with the Sydney Conservatorium Chamber Orchestra conducted by Brett Dean, and has recently returned from a chamber music tour of southern New South Wales.

Hui Juan Zhai
Sharon Zhai is a China born Australian soprano, she has achieved two degrees in opera performance at the conservatory of Beijing in China and the Sydney conservatory of Music in Australia where she also obtained a master’s degree. She came to Australia in 2003 and during her study in Sydney, she proudly obtained the distinguished talent visa and later on in 2009, she became Australian Citizen. In the course of her studies in Sydney and Beijing she has interpreted different roles included The Queen of the night in Die Zauberflote by Mozart, Madame Silberklang in Der Schauspieldirektor, Lizzie in Coffee cantata by Bach, Celia in La Fedelta' premiata by Haydn, Dido in Dido and Aeneas by Henry Purcell. She went to Milan Italy in 2009 and there she continued her study privately under the guidance of the soprano Tiziana Fabbricini. During her years in Milan Sharon has exhibited in numerous operas and concerts throughout Europe, America and Asia. Debuted opera roles from the most recent, include: Zerlina in Don Giovanni with the Piccolo Festival FVG at Villa Manin di Passariano at Codroipo and Castello di San Giusto in Trieste; Anna in Nabucco at the theaters of the Opera Circuit Lombardo (AS.LI.Co.) with performances in Cremona, Brescia, Como and Pavia; Gilda in Rigoletto at the Teatro Politeama in Saluzzo; Desdemona in the American opera Jago of Carlo Pedini, International Opera Theater of Philadelphia (PA, USA); Liu in Turandot at the Teatro San Giovanni Bosco di Bergamo; The Lover in Il Tabarro from the Trittico; Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi for the ''Macau International Music Festival'' at the auditorium of Macao Cultural Center Grand. She was the winner in some internation vocal competitions in Italy including O.M.E.G.A. in Florence(2013); "Umberto Giordano" in Lucera, Foggia (2013); "Magda Olivero" in Saluzzo, Cuneo(2012); "Franca Mattiucci" in Canelli, Asti (2012); She also won the International Lieder ''Mietta Song Recital Award'' in Melbourne, Australia(2004). Sharon has participated in numerous concerts in Italy and abroad including, most recent: Tafelmusik with the Associazion Mozart Italy in Salzburg and a collaboration concert with Marcello Abbado in the Villa Reale in Milan; Puccini concert at the Teatro San Giovanni Bosco di Bergamo; Tafelmusik in collaboration with the Mozart Association Italy, Trieste headquarters; concert in Assisi for the celebration of the day "We are in the final Capital - Perugia Assisi with the European Capital of Culture 2019" in collaboration with the Mozart Association of Perugia and with the renowned pianist Leone Magiera; Memorial "Maria Callas" with 4 concerts at the Teatro Villoresi Monza, the Ancona Muse Theater, Teatro Comunale in Latina and the Teatro Comunale di Fontanellato (Parma); TafelRunde in Saxony, in collaboration with Mozart Association Germany; New Year Concert at the Teatro Dante of Campi Bisenzio (FI) with Orchestra Nuova Europa; "Waiting for Traviata": execution of Verdi arias with the renowned pianist Roberto Prosseda and participation of the robot Teo-Tronico, at Palazzina Liberty, Milan; concert season in different locations of the Mozart Association Italy and in collaboration with the Museum of Verdi in Busseto. The concerts were held with several Italian and international artists including, among others, the master Leone Magiera and Corrado Huzza; the Regina coeli KV127 by Mozart accompanied by the orchestra of Macau and from the ARS NOVA Vocal Ensemble Hungarian at the auditorium of Macao Cultural Center Grand. Sharon has worked with internation artists, including Leone Magiera, Bonoldo Giaiodi, Umberto Finazzi, Leila Cuberli, Marget Genoese Baker, Stephen Delaney, David Wakeham, Nico and Carol Castel, Joan Dornemann, Dennis Neil, Ned Canty, Karen Shepherd. ABC Classic FM and 3MBS of Australia have transmitted her performances.

Julia Malczewski
Julia Malczewski obtained both a Bachelor of Music Degree and a Post-Graduate Diploma of Music in Vocal Studies from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, 1996. Since graduating, Julia has participated frequently in nationwide competitions and was selected as a finalist in the Opera Foundation’s German Operatic Award for 2004, was semi-finalist in the City of Melbourne Song Recital Award for both 1998 and 1999, and winner of the ‘People’s Prize’ in the Dame Joan Sutherland Award, 2001. During 2002, Julia participated in the Advanced Performance Program at the Australian National Academy of Music, Melbourne. Julia has sung for Opera Queensland, for OzOpera Sydney and is currently engaged with Opera Australia. Recent overseas tuition includes several months study in Rome, Italy, where she studied with Ms Margaret Baker-Genovesi. Julia also maintains a very successful career on the concert platform as soloist performing works by Handel, Haydn and Orff and performing regularly with the Queensland Pops Orchestra.
Claire Cooper
Melbourne based, pianist Claire Cooper is a versatile and much sought after associate artist. Claire studied piano at the Canberra School of Music, and later at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. She was repetiteur and accompanist at the Victorian College of the Arts for five years and is currently a staff pianist at the Faculty of Music, University of Melbourne. As a freelance pianist, Claire works as a soloist, associate artist, orchestral pianist, vocal coach and repetiteur. Claire has twice won the Musical Partnership Prize in the City of Melbourne Song Recital Award, in 1998 with Blake Fischer, and in 1999 with Melanie Duncan. Numerous radio broadcasts include Young Australia Program for ABC Classic FM and ABC LIVE broadcast. Claire is releasing a CD of music for flute and piano featuring female Australian composers in 2005. In 2003 she collaborated again with Melanie Duncan in the highly acclaimed Clarified, a multi-media recital which explores the life and music of Clara Schumann. Clarified will feature at the Castlemaine Festival in 2005. Claire Cooper is the official accompanist for the Mietta Song Recital Award for 2004.

Robert Stewart
Robert Stewart studied at the University of Toronto (MusBacPerf, AdvPerf) and the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (MMus) in Glasgow. Now in Melbourne, Robert has been a finalist in the Mietta Song Recital Award and recently appeared in New Zealand Opera’s production of Carmen. He also performs regularly at St John’s Southgate in their Bach cantata series, including performances with Bach’s successor, Thomaskantor Christoph Biller. Robert was a Vocal Fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center in the summer of 1999 and participated in Master Classes with Pierre Valet, Phyllis Curtin and Ernst Haefliger. While at Tanglewood, he performed Bach’s Selig ist der Mann with American Bach scholar, Craig Smith, and members of the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra. Other engagements have included concerts with the Toronto Symphony, the Amadeus Choir, the Aldeburgh Connection, the Bell’arte Singers, the Ottawa Valley Festival, and on CBC Radio Two with the Aradia Ensemble. He has also made several recordings with both the Amadeus Choir and the Aradia Ensemble for Naxos Records. In 1995, Robert performed the role of Ham in Britten’s opera Noye’s Fludde as part of the Canadian cultural contribution for the UN’s 50th anniversary celebrations in San Francisco.
Claire Preston
Claire Preston is currently a Lecturer in Music at the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA), and Head of Choral Studies at the VCA Secondary School. She has worked in State and private schools in Australia and Canada, and is a faculty accompanist at the Melba Conservatorium. Specialising in developing young singers, she has worked extensively in Australia and North America. Claire has been Assistant Conductor with the internationally renowned Toronto Children’s Chorus and Assistant Conductor/Chief Accompanist for the Canadian Children’s Opera Chorus, and served as accompanist for the Elmer Iseler Singers, Canada’s foremost professional choir. While accompanist at the University of Toronto, she worked with Dr Doreen Rao, Sir David Willcocks and Helmuth Rilling. Performance highlights include appearances at the World Symposium on Choral Music in Minneapolis, Joy of Singing International Choral Festival, and recording the world première of Harry Somers’ children’s opera A Mid-winter Night’s Dream for CBC Records (recently nominated for a Juno Award). Claire has been a finalist in the Mietta Song Recital Award.

Stuart Haycock
Australian born tenor Stuart Haycock studied voice at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music before completing his studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Engagements include Bardolph Falstaff for Mid Wales Opera, Don Curzio Le Nozze di Figaro for Garsington Opera, Borsa Rigoletto at Iford Arts Festival, Ferrando Cosi Fan Tutte for English Chamber Opera Panatellas La Perichole for Opera South, Mole in Fantastic Mr Fox for English Touring Opera, Triquet Eugene Onegin for Stanley Hall Opera, and St Brioche The Merry Widow for Opera Project.
Caroline Badnall
Caroline began her musical education at the age of six, and started performing at seven. Her early promise continued throughout her schooling, passing her L.Mus.A from the Brisbane Conservatorium of Music at the age of sixteen. 2001 saw Caroline being awarded the Cecilia Daff Scholarship for Piano. In October that year her 3rd year Recital Program was recorded for the Young Australia series on ABC Classic FM, and broadcast in April 2002. In May, Caroline was awarded the prestigious Helen Court Scholarship for the most outstanding final year student. In 2002, Caroline was awarded the AMEB Fellowship of Music as well as graduating as Bachelor of Music. Also in 2002 Caroline was awarded the $12,000 Macleod Scholarship from the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts, allowing her to study in London—investigating Masters Degrees in repetiteur studies. Caroline has performed as soloist with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra and works regularly with the West Australian Opera Company, the West Academy of Performing Arts and the Lieder Society of Western Australia.
